The 29-year-old took over as captain of club and country in the summer following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Steven Gerrard respectively, and according to United colleague Smalling, he is perfect for both roles.
“He’s a real determined character, he’s very honest no matter what,” Smalling told Saturday Night Football. “Whether we’ve played well or not, he’s always saying what he thinks.
“Before the games when he is having those speeches, he is saying it from the heart and you can feel it. That breeds confidence through us.
“That and the England captaincy, he has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders but he is thriving under that and I didn't doubt that for a player of his calibre.
“When he's off the pitch he's always that person a lot of younger players look up to. He's very approachable as well, from the outside looking in you might not think that.”
Smalling was speaking ahead of a crucial Premier League encounter in which Manchester United travel to Chelsea looking to close the gap on second-placed Arsenal. It's a game you can see live on Sky Sports.
Despite their opponents' impressive form and seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, the United centre-back is confident his side can get a result.
He said: "It is a difficult one, they have hands down been the most consistent team this season and they deserve to be where they are. But I think we can go to Stamford Bridge with belief because of the run we are on.
“We've shown we can be a hard team to break down, and we have those players, particularly the front three, who are in the form of their lives.”
