Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches on brink of Napoli move

Vlad Chiriches is set for a move to Napoli with Sky sources reporting the Tottenham defender is in Italy for a medical. The Romanian international has failed to command a regular first team place since his £8.5m move to White Hart Lane from Steaua Bucharest in August 2013 and pictures on Tuesday night showed the player arriving in Italy. Sky Sport Italia understand the defender will head to Dimaro, Napoli's summer training base, to complete the formalities of a move with sources reporting a fee of £3.5m plus £1.42m in add-ons has been agreed between the two clubs. 1ST GOALSCORER - 30th Jul Real MvAC Milan Cristiano Ronaldo11/4 Karim Benzema4/1 Gareth Bale11/2 CORRECT SCORE - 30th Jul Real MvAC Milan 2-17/11-216/12-015/20-118/11-08/10-233/1 Bet nowBet £5 get £20 free Chiriches, initially made available on loan in January, has also been linked with a move to Fiorentina but Napoli are now in pole position to seal a deal for the defender who started just eight Premier League games last season. Tottenham signed seven players in 2013 with the funds generated from the world record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid but of those players, Etienne Capoue and Paulinho have already left the club with Chiriches and Roberto Soldado expected to join them. Spurs are also poised to offload Emmanuel Adebayor with Sky sources reporting the striker will undergo a medical with Aston Villa on Wednesday ahead of a season-long loan move.

Window? Just Leave The Door Open...

The summer transfer window is a thing of great joy, but it goes without saying that it is, as a concept, ludicrous. The idea that you can only recruit players for a couple of months does not surrender its logic to scrutiny. If you have to have a window - and you don't - then clearly, it should end before the season starts, not a few weeks afterwards. Get your group of players together and stick with them for a whole season; you might be able to sell that as an idea. But the current set-up pleases no-one. But my main objection is simply that ongoing transfer speculation was an important lifeblood of football culture and, by taking away the possibility of a transfer happening until the following July (the January deadline is, more often than not, a damp squib), it significantly reduces the fun we can have during the season. July is a reminder of what it used to be like before this artificial discipline was placed on us. There is always so much to digest, so much to speculate about and so much that brings a tear of laughter to the eye. It's wonderful. First up, there are all the comedy speculations such as Jonny Evans to Arsenal for £10million. THAT Johnny Evans? Are you sure? Then there are the genuinely brilliant coups like Crystal Palace signing Yohan Cabaye. There are the thrilling but uncertain moves such as Georginio Wijnaldum to Newcastle United and that's before we even get to the big-name transfers such as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Raheem Sterling. Then you've got the expensive mulit-million pound signings that, frankly, you've never heard of because he was out on loan at Villareal last season or played for a club that you could not successfully locate on a map.

Radja Nainggolan signs Roma extension until 2020

Roma have confirmed that midfielder Radja Nainggolan has signed a new five-year deal with the club. The 27-year-old Belgium international has put pen to paper on a contract extension which will see him stay at the Stadio Olimpico until the end of the 2019-20 season. Nainggolan, a January 2014 recruit from Serie A rivals Cagliari, has been rewarded for a series of impressive performances during last season when he made 46 appearances for Rudi Garcia's side and scored five goals. His exploits in midfield helped Roma finish runners-up to league champions Juventus and the Eternal City club's hierarchy have offered him fresh terms in order to ward off reported suitors including Liverpool and Manchester United. "I'm delighted - this is what I wanted. I think the club is happy too," Nainggolan told the club's official website. "We both took a step towards each other and we found the best solution for all parties." He added: "I'm delighted to have extended my stay at this club. I'll do everything I can for this shirt to repay Roma for the faith they've shown in me. "My aims for this year? I hope to finally win the Scudetto or, if not, at least another trophy."

Yohan Cabaye to Crystal Palace: Classy upgrade can help Eagles soar

With Yohan Cabaye’s transfer from Paris St Germain to Crystal Palace confirmed, Adam Bate examines what the former Newcastle midfielder can bring to his new club and exactly why it will be considered such a coup. When a new player arrives at a club it’s customary for supporters to consider what he’ll bring to the team. Crystal Palace fans could well be asking a similar but subtly different question regarding Yohan Cabaye: What won’t he bring to this team? They might remember the performance he served up on his last visit to Selhurst Park. Newcastle were 3-0 winners that day in December 2013 – a result that kept Alan Pardew’s Magpies in the top six and Palace in the drop zone. Cabaye scored the opening goal.Pardew praised the “functionality” of his team, with one exception. “The bottom line is the player has a true character and he added an x-factor for us today. When you’re at the top of the Premier League you can't stay there unless you have got x-factor and he gives us that.” Cabaye left for Paris Saint-Germain the following month and life at Newcastle seemed like a slog for Pardew and his players from that point onwards. In Cabaye's final two seasons at St James’ Park, the team’s win percentage was 45 per cent with him and 21 per cent without.

Asmir Begovic is set to join Chelsea from Stoke

Sky sources report that Chelsea are close to signing Bosnian international goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Stoke. However, Stoke will not allow the 28-year-old to leave until they have completed the signing of Shay Given from Aston Villa. Chelsea favourite Petr Cech acted as deputy to number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge last season but the experienced Czech international was sold to Arsenal last month. And Begovic, who has just a year left on his Stoke deal, now looks set to slot into Cech’s role in the squad. England U21 international Jack Butland is poised to take over from Begovic as Stoke’s first-choice goalkeeper, with the 39-year-old Given also competing for the jersey if his move goes through. The hugely experienced Republic of Ireland international completed a medical at Stoke on Thursday but has yet to finalise the terms of his release from Villa.

Chelsea Ladies sign Fran Kirby for British record fee

Chelsea Ladies have signed England international Fran Kirby from Reading for a British record transfer fee. Striker Kirby, who had been a part of the Reading set-up since the age of eight, was in demand after her performances at the recent Women's World Cup in Canada, where she helped England claim a bronze medal. Dubbed the 'Mini Messi', Kirby scored England's first goal of the tournament in the 2-1 win over Mexico after going into the competition in red-hot form - she scored 11 goals in Reading's first five games of the season before leaving on England duty.

Youngsters Josh Cullen, Reece Burke, Reece Oxford, Elliot Lee and Djair Parfitt-Williams will all hope for another opportunity after featuring last week.
