Wilcox want at least two more

The backing from the chairman and board has been first class and everything I have asked for I've managed to get. "I'm very positive and can't wait to get going now." Wilcox, who signed striker Vadaine Oliver from Crewe last month, replaced Nigel Worthington in October and is preparing for his first full season in charge at Bootham Crescent. He added: "We are trying to recruit in the right way by not only bringing in players with experience, but who have also performed at a higher level. "I'm pleased with the additions we have made to the squad right the way through the spine. "We've added competition for places which is always important, as well as possible game changers from the bench which you look at as a manager.

Morgan Schneiderlin's future at Southampton set to be resolved

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin expects his future to be resolved in the "coming days". The France international has been linked with a summer move away from St Mary's, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all interested in him according to widespread reports. "The negotiations are ongoing and should be completed in the coming days," he told France Bleu Alsace radio station. "Hopefully before the resumption of [Southampton's pre-season] training next week." "We paid about £1m [to Strasbourg] for him back in 2008, so with a couple of promotions and another decent transfer fee it certainly represents another good return. “I think Southampton have always been fair with players and not stood in their way when bigger clubs have met their valuation, which was shown last summer." Schneiderlin was subject to transfer speculation last summer, before helping the club to qualify for the Europa League with a seventh-placed finish in last season's Premier League.

In Defence Of Wayne Rooney

Tyler Coate Rooney Anything But Inconsistent I cant believe this is still debated. Many people let their personal views on him affect their judgement of him and his career, united fans included. If I offered you an 18 year old striker now who could bring you a goal every other game for a decade, and nearly as many assists, who would score in every round of the champions league, who would end his career as his nations and clubs all time top goal scorers, probably second all time in the prem, who currently sits 4th in assists since records began, has every club trophy except fa cup and so on. You would think this was roy of the rovers stuff, but cos he looks like a potato and can get rather aggressive on the pitch, as he is a sore loser like most winners (Mourinho, Ferguson for example), he is disparaged. If he had played for your team, you would love him for his passion, his hard work, his ability at times to take over a game on his own (Yes this has happened countless times when he is on his top form) and his desire to win. You can call him inconsistent, but one in two over a whole career is anything but that and he provides more than just goal scoring. Utd fans who have turned on him, i get it, its a money issue, a lack of respect for the club you might say at a push. Anyway, as for his England appearances lately, he missed the end of the season through injury, hadnt played in like 6 or 7 weeks maybe? How long does golden boy Jack Wilshire take to find his form after yet another injury? Give him a break, he will qualify england with his goals again, as he has done for most of the last few tournaments. Then he just has to be fit at the start of the tournament for a change. Anyway, blah, haters will still hate. But history will be much kinder to him. Matt, MUFC U21 Management Decisions Baffling I have always been half amused/half baffled by the England FA's approach to the the management of the U21s. So the last two managers of the team, Stuart Pearce and Gareth Southgate have taken Man City perilously close to relegation, and actually relegated Middlesborough respectively. But then almost immediately afterwards, they've been handed the England U21 job!! And the more incredible part of the whole thing is it seems to be widely greeted as good appointments!!! I live in Ghana, and we take our youth football very seriously, there is no way a manager will be appointed to the U17, U20 or U23 (Olympic team) if he had so demonstrably failed with a club side previously. Seriously, is there something i have missed? Nani Kofi

Richards Must Act To Curb The Decline

Micah Richards turns 27 next week, another example of football's innate ability to play tricks on the mind. Where did that fresh-faced defender go? How is he possibly less than five years younger than James Collins? What have we all been doing with our lives? Richards is still England's youngest ever defender, beating Rio Ferdinand to that honour when called up by Steve McClaren in 2006. Quick, strong and skilful, he started six competitive international matches before turning 20. This was Gary Neville for a new generation, England's answer at right-back. A gem had been unearthed in Manchester, via Oldham. How quickly exciting potential becomes wasted opportunity. Richards has transformed from tomorrow's answer to yesterday's man. Following his release by Manchester City, the defender has joined Aston Villa on a four-year deal. While his old side compete for the title, Richards seeks regular football at the club who have finished 16th, 15th, 15th and 17th in the last four Premier League seasons. An England international defender in the prime of his career joining one English club from another should be big news, as the aforementioned Ferdinand can testify. Richards, however, will slip out of a side door at the Etihad, his departure met with neither anguish nor celebration. There is nothing as demeaning as being ignored. Richards' decline is symbolised by the inevitability of his departure from City. This is a club whose only homegrown options for next season are a first-choice goalkeeper, a 29-year-old French left-back and a 37-year-old goalkeeper whose last Premier League start was in 2007. City were keen to let Richards leave on loan last season, yet Dedryck Boyata made two Premier League appearances. There was talk of interest from Juventus and Internazionale in Richards last summer, but a move to Fiorentina only served to continue the alarming decline. He started only seven Serie A Matches, criticised by coach Vicenzo Montella in January for his lack of fitness. "His fitness levels weren't up to scratch," Montella said. "He is more of a full-back in a four-man defence and when he arrived, in my view, his fitness levels weren't up to scratch to sustain that role." Very few in Florence will have mourned his retreat back to the Premier League. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Richards attempted to improve his PR by claiming disbelief at his lack of minutes in Italy. "I don't know whether it's because I've been on loan and I haven't made a commitment to stay," he said. "No disrespect to the players here, I feel I should have been playing." The article described Richards as a 'football obsessive' and 'renaissance man'. One doth protest too much? Once renowned for his pace and endeavour to surge forward, disagreements with the views of various managers has become the new hallmark of Richards' career. When Roberto Mancini was City boss, he famously reminded his defender to "remember to pick up his brain". "He has good quality but sometimes Micah thinks he can play at only 50%," Mancini said. "If Micah plays to 100%, he can become one of the top full-backs in Europe. But he needs to improve. His body is on the pitch, but his mind is left at home sometimes." And that's coming from one of his fans.

Rio labels Sterling, Kane prices 'a joke

England international Sterling has reportedly been priced at £50m by Liverpool as Manchester City vie for his services, having had two separate bids of £25m and £35m plus £5m add-ons rejected. Kane is a target for City's neighbours Manchester United, with the price of the Tottenham star regularly quoted at around £40m. Ferdinand, himself subject to a former British record transfer, has hit out at the prices however, insinuating that they are indicative of an English 'premium' in the transfer market. 'English players are so overpriced right now," Ferdinand posted on Twitter. "It's a joke! Kane and Sterling have huge potential but £40m and £50m? Aguero £38m and Sanchez £32m!!!' When challenged over his one-time record £30m transfer from Leeds United to Man United in 2002, the 36-year-old responded bullishly. 'Look at the amount of Premier League and Champions League games I had played in before the move...oh, and a World Cup! Don't compare me please! There are others'.

Sports stars behaving badly: Have they lost touch with reality?

Outrage upon outrage. An England footballer, clearly drunk, sings an obscene song in public. A rugby star assaults two female police officers. Three young Premier League players are sent home from a tour after allegedly appearing in a racist sex tape. Out of control, out of touch. Spoiled by success, intoxicated by money. This easy analysis may be true. None of these stories reflects well on the young men involved, none adds lustre to sport's currently grubby image. Yet none of it is particularly new. A medicinal whisky at half-time Jack Wilshere, occasional smoker of fags, singer of anti-Tottenham chants on cup final parades, plays for a club whose most iconic captain of the last 40 years was imprisoned for drink-driving. The manager who first made that man skipper was banned from football for a year for taking bungs. You might think Tony Adams and George Graham were one-offs. In which case it's probably worth being reminded of the rather more distinctive case of former Arsenal midfielder Peter Storey, who counts among his various criminal deeds being given a six-month suspended sentence for running a brothel, the Calypso Massage Parlour, in Leytonstone.

Preston v Swindon: Peter Beagrie's League One play-off preview

Swindon are the perceived underdogs heading into this tie. For most of the season they’ve replicated the shape of Bristol City and they were replicating the results – outscoring teams, going forward at will and attack being their best form of defence. There has been a brilliant influence from the lads in midfield, and that has been Swindon’s strength. Yaser Kasim and Massimo Luongo are great at winning and retaining possession. Swindon may be hampered by injuries – Louis Thompson is out and we will wait and see if how Nathan Thompson’s hamstring injury is faring. Swindon’s hopes could rest on a boost if he’s fit ahead of this huge task. Ones to watch Swindon and Sheffield United played out a ten-goal thriller in the second leg of their League One playoff semi-final. Swindon and Sheffield United played out a ten-goal thriller in the second leg of their League One playoff semi-final. Ben Gladwin has been the unsung hero coming from non-league Marlow FC. Play-off triumph would cap a meteoric rise for him on this stage. He’s a big strong lad who moves very well on the ball, and he’s got an eye for goal and he has taken to League football like a duck to water. His influence has grown, he scored a magnificent goal in the semi-final and he is technically gifted. A lot of people will be wishing they had taken a punt on him, he’s a tremendous talent. Nathan Byrne in the right wing-back position has been the one over the two semi-final legs, and the season in fairness, who has shown incredible tenacity. When they turn defence into attack, it’s mainly this guy who can carry the ball 50 to 70 yards and he will flourish at Wembley. Preston North End

Martin Tyler's FA Cup stats: Omens for Arsenal v Aston Villa

Martin’s starting stats Before I answer your FA Cup questions, here’s a few stats from Chelsea v Sunderland on the final day of the season. Diego Costa’s goal had these implications: It took him to 20 for the Premier League this season. It was the 200th goal scored in Chelsea's home Premier League games under Jose Mourinho. It was the first goal Chelsea scored this season against Sunderland – meaning they scored against every Premier League rival this season. Years ending in a ‘5’ do well for Chelsea. They were founded in 1905, they won their first league title in 1955 and they won the League Cup in 1965, their second league title and another League Cup came in 2005. Their fifth title and another League Cup came in 2015. I’m sure they’ll win something else before 2025! Steven Fletcher had gone 25 games without a goal since scoring two at Crystal Palace in November. Sunderland have now won only once in the last 14 Premier League games on the last day. John Terry became only the second outfield player to play every minute in a Premier League season and win the title, following Gary Pallister in 1992/93 who played 42 games. He’s the first Chelsea player to do that since Eric Parsons and Derek Saunders in 1954/55. They lost only four games, which is the best ever in all competitions in the Premier League era, beating the five of Manchester United in the treble-winning season of 1998/99. All four defeats were to clubs managed by managers whose surnames start with the letter P – Pardew, Pochettino, Parkinson and Pulis. It was probably just as well Poyet was not managing Sunderland on Sunday! My Sky Sports colleague Nick Collins made Jose Mourinho collapse into laughter when he asked him if he was worried he could lose manager of the year to Nigel Pearson. This is also the first time in the Premier League era that Chelsea have scored three times in a Premier League game and all of the goals were scored by substitutes.

Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp and Ed Chamberlin had a tough decision when choosing the Budweiser Dream Goal. David de Gea urged to stay at Manchester United by Edwin van der Sar

Brazil's Copa America campaign started with a win as an injury-time Douglas Costa goal saw them beat Peru 2-1. The sides exchanged goals in a chaotic opening five minutes in Temuco, Neymar's header (5) answering an opener that Brazil's goalkeeper Jefferson gifted Christian Cueva (3), but it took until the 92nd minute for Costa to prod Brazil to three points. The result - an 11th straight win - leaves Brazil on three points in Group C alongside Venezuela, shock winners over Colombia in the day's early game. The Colombians next face Brazil on Wednesday but - Neymar aside - there was little to frighten them on the night ahead of a game they cannot now afford to lose. Peru took barely two minutes to give Dunga's side a bloody nose: David Luiz's casual pass did not make life easy for Jefferson, but the 'keeper should still have avoided side-footing straight to Cueva, who banged the ball back past him. The lead did not last long, Neymar left in all sorts of space to head in a right-wing cross, and the captain would have had a 45th international goal but for a brilliant Carlos Zambrano block. Jefferson made a meal of a couple of Peru potshots, but it was Brazil who had the better of the scarce chances after the break as Neymar clattered the crossbar from distance and Costa dinked wide at the end of a quick counter-attack. A draw looked nailed on when Neymar then bent a shot wide on his left foot, but the Barcelona man picked out a pass of pure class to give Costa a second opportunity. This time,

Phil Jones on critics: "Gone are the days when I used to take notice of what people say and react" Read more at http://talksport.com/football/phil-jones-critics-gone-are-days-when-i-used-take-notice-what-people-say-and-react#CPxHDB9zz5soziZS.99

Phil Jones is "not quite clever enough" to be a centre-back in Paul Scholes' opinion, but the England international doesn’t care what his former Manchester United team-mate or anyone else thinks. The 23-year-old was rather surprisingly deployed as right-back instead of supposed first choice Nathaniel Clyne in the Three Lions' friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday. Jones was solid enough in the 0-0 draw at the Aviva Stadium, although centre-back is the United defender's preferred position - a role Scholes believes he is "not quite clever enough to do". The defender's former team-mate believes he gets dragged out of position too easily, and reckons his pace, power and crossing ability makes him more effective as a full-back. "People comment all the time about individuals," Jones said when asked about the comments. "Gone are the days when I used to take notice of what people say and react to it. It doesn't bother me one little bit any more. "I am at the stage now where I can't be considered as a young player any more. I have got to step up, keep playing well and do what I do best." Right-back is the third different role Jones has been asked to play in as many games, having played in central defence against Lithuania and then pushed into midfield against Italy a few days later. "I was no [Andrea] Pirlo or something like that - do you know what I mean?" Jones said. "I could have told you that before the game! "I can laugh about it now but I try to do the job as best I can. I know I'm not an out-and-out midfielder who is going to get on the ball and start spraying it about. I know what I am good at and I try to stick to that. "I have played in all three [positions)] now and sometimes it can be difficult going from one position to the next, but I feel more comfortable at right-back. "Obviously centre-back is where I want to be playing, but I was happy to play at right-back [against Ireland]. "You just take it on the chin and play where you are asked to play. I know I can play in those positions. "Some people think it is easy to just slot in there and everyone assumes that you have got to be up to speed straight away, but I was happy to play and it was a tough game." Drab goalless draw in Dublin England's winless run against the Republic of Ireland was extended to six matches on Sunday following a torpid 0-0 draw in a friendly at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.

It was the first time England had played in Dublin since crowd trouble caused a friendly in February 1995 to be abandoned after only 27 minutes, but while this match thankfully passed off without incident off the pitch, there was precious little to stir the blood on it. It was nonetheless a memorable occasion for England forward Jamie Vardy and Ireland midfielder Harry Arter, both of whom made their international debuts. Both teams will now switch their attentions to 2016 European Championship qualifiers next weekend, when Ireland host Scotland in a key Group D fixture and England look to extend their 100 per cent record in Group E away to Slovenia. A small number of home fans whistled during 'God Save the Queen', but it was Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling who bore the brunt of their ire. Generally, though, the atmosphere was as flat as a pancake, reflecting a drab game with a distinct end-of-term feel. England's probings, generally instigated by midfield anchor Jack Wilshere, came to nought, and it was Ireland who created what few chances there were in the first half. Daryl Murphy jabbed fractionally wide from Jeff Hendrick's flick-on, while David McGoldrick, Murphy's Ipswich Town team-mate, saw a shot deflected behind by Gary Cahill. It was not until a minute before half-time that England mustered an attempt at goal, Adam Lallana cutting in from the left and shooting over. England captain Wayne Rooney was a virtual bystander in the first half and when Jordan Henderson's pass gave him a clear run on goal early in the second, his touch betrayed him. The game began to open up a bit though, with England goalkeeper Joe Hart ferrying a Robbie Brady free-kick around his near post and parrying from substitute Jon Walters at one end, and Sterling shooting wide at the other. A gaggle of Irish substitutions early in the second half included a debut for Bournemouth midfielder Arter, who replaced Glenn Whelan. Leicester City striker Vardy entered the fray with 16 minutes to play, replacing Rooney, to complete a remarkable three-year ascent from non-league to international football. After Arter had drilled wide following a run from deep, England substitute Andros Townsend took aim from distance, but Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given, who had replaced Keiren Westwood, got down well to keep the visitors without a win in Ireland since a 3-1 friendly victory in May 1964. p>http://www.vaasanyliopistonylioppilaskunta.com/images/WP/index.php

Sterling 'will not go to United'

Liverpool insist Sterling is not for sale, to United or any other club, but with the England winger set on leaving Anfield, a large bid may test their resolve. Reports on Friday suggested United were potentially interested on signing Sterling, and that Sterling is open to the idea of becoming the first Liverpool player since Allenby Chilton in 1938 to swap Anfield for Old Trafford. But Sky sources understand that there is no way Liverpool will entertain selling one of their prized assets to their bitter rivals. Sterling has turned down a £100,000 a week contract offer from Liverpool. There is no shortage of interest from home and abroad since it became clear he wants to leave. United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Real Madrid have all been linked with him.

The Friday Gossip Falcao eager to complete Chelsea move, Advocaat to be given £50m transfer kitty, Van Persie to join Lazio...

FALCAO EAGER TO COMPLETE CHELSEA MOVE We bet he bloody is. After spectacularly failing at Old Trafford last season, the chance of Radamel Falcao 'earning' a move to Chelsea seems to be growing by the day. The Daily Telegraph report that Falcao would like to have his loan deal at Stamford Bridge sorted out before the Copa America begins next Wednesday. Monaco would prefer a permanent transfer. Again, we bet they bloody would - the fee would be in the region of £30m. Has everyone forgotten about his legs looking a bit broken? Falcao is also reportedly prepared to take a drop in his current £265,000-a-week salary. Can we say we bet he bloody is again? ADVOCAAT TO BE GIVEN £50M KITTY Oh Sunderland. We're of the opinion that appointing Dick Advocaat on a longer deal is probably a good idea given that nobody else half decent seemed to want the job. However, it's worth remembering that Advocaat has only signed a one-year deal. Sunderland are a year zero club addicted to constant change. This is hardly a long-term appointment. Now there is worse news, namely that Advocaat will be given a £50m transfer budget this summer. That's according to the Daily Mirror. Are they absolutely sodding mad? Why would you let a manager spend £50m on players on three and four-year deals when that same man might well leave in a year? VAN PERSIE TO LAZIO Lazio have reportedly been one of a number of Italian teams sniffing around Robin van Persie for a while, but it seems they may have made progress in the race for the Dutchman. Italian newspaper Il Messaggero claims that Van Persie is Lazio owner Claudio Lotito's dream signing. After qualifying for the Champions League ahead of Napoli, Lazio are shopping in the big boys market again.
